Spectrophotometric Determination of Neomycin in Eye Drops via Developed Hantzsch Condensation Reagent

A novel spectrophotometry method has been proposed to quantitatively evaluate neomycin sulphate in its pure form and pharmaceutical eye drop preparations. The Hantzsch condensation reaction method was developed by adding trimethylammonium bromide as a surfactant to create a condensed complex with a strong orange color and a high absorption peak at 488 nm wavelength. Beer's law linearity was determined to be between 5 and 125µg/ml in concentration, with a molar absorptivity of 2.89 x103 l/mol.cm, Sandell sensitivity of 0.212 µg/cm2, a limit of quantification of 3.66 µg/ml, and a determination coefficient of 0.9990. The recommended procedure was used to determine the amount of neomycin in the formulation (eye drops), and the results produced were analytically acceptable.
